Astrid Lowe

My focus is on developing motivated search dogs that work independently and reliably. I prioritise clarity, mechanics, and training decisions that lead to lasting results.

Motivation keeps a dog in the task when conditions change or pressure increases. Independence matters because reliable work depends on the dog owning the task rather than constant handler input. Solid foundations make later work possible and shouldn’t be rushed.

My approach
I’m interested in what works in practice rather than in defending methods for their own sake. I look at mechanics, handling decisions, and the session set-up. My coaching is direct and outcome-focused, with attention to detail.

I work closely with handlers throughout the process, engaging with their progress and helping them refine both their dogs’ work and their own decision-making. I don’t believe in quick fixes. I focus on training that remains effective when complexity increases.

Who I work with
I coach sport and working dog handlers at different stages of training — from those laying early foundations to experienced handlers refining ongoing work. The people I work best with seek performance and reliability and value motivation and independence. They're prepared to question their own training choices in order to improve results.

I work with clients worldwide through online training and mentoring, so the work comes first rather than where you’re based.

Experience and ongoing development
My work is shaped by practical experience, continued education, and collaboration with other trainers. I hold a degree in psychology, which informs how I think about motivation, learning, and reinforcement — for both dogs and handlers.

The dogs I’ve raised and developed over the past years have all gone on to working roles, most into explosives detection. They show the motivation, independence, and reliability needed to carry the task beyond training.

I keep reviewing my own work and adjusting it based on results. What matters to me is training that produces consistent results over time.

"Astrid’s coaching and guidance are helping me stay on track and develop my skills as a handler, so I can set up my dog to succeed. I especially enjoy her focus on developing the right mindset which is also helping me with horse riding."
